A Crash of Symbols

Art can now be anything, and anything can now be art. Painting no longer hangs on the wall, and sculpture has stepped down from podium; painters no longer draw with the brush, but are praised for "making marks" on canvases; sculptors have abandoned carving stone and, instead, assemble the detritus of the builder's yard and rubbish dump; to gain world wide critical acclaim it is enough to hang a grand piano from the ceiling.
The art of the past is damned so often now by the politically correct polytechnic school of art history - yet the art of the past has for some 2,500 years concerned itself with the distinctions between vice and virtue, and with the abstractions of honor, sacrifice, justice, chastity, fortitude, piety, prudence, temperance and all the other that could fleshed as figures in painting and sculpture to remind us of what is right and what is wrong.
This was to be found in the public buildings of Greece and Rome and the town halls of Renaissance Italy, this is obvious enough in the Albert Memorial, the murals in the Houses of Parliament, and the Artillery memorial at Hyde Park Corner - indeed, in the memorials of the Great War we see the last flowering of art that recognized and embodied the abstractions of valour, sacrifice and honor.
Now, three generations later, we have become so accustomed to abstract art that we are incapable of recognizing abstractions. With the neglect of classical languages, history and philosophy, we have lost the cultural base on which an understanding of almost all western art of the past is founded. An alliterate peasant in the Balkans has a better grasp of art's traditions than most western doctors of philosophy.
