Life without the Internet seems impossible
The Internet has only become more widely used by the public in the early nineties, although it was first invented in the 1950s. Since the nineties, technology has advanced at an amazing speed. Better Internet connectivity, faster Internet, wireless and mobile devices, including smart phones and tablets, have made Internet access easier and more convenient today.
Can you imagine your life without the internet? I am part of a generation that had to grow up without the comfort of the Internet as a teenager. I was only exposed to the Internet in my late twenties. There were no emails or smart phones and school tasks were completed by using hard copy encyclopaedia as references. Today it is hard to believe that I did not grow up with the Internet.
But why has the Internet become such an integral part of our lives? This article explores the obvious but also the not so obvious reasons.
The more obvious reasons are:
In need of information: Information on any topic imaginable is instantly available by pressing a button. People want information for various reasons and the Internet can provide that information instantly.
Saving time and money: Many people spend time online to save both time and money. It is much quicker to do Internet banking or to do electronic bank transfers than to actually queue in a bank. Similarly it is more convenient for many busy people to do online shopping than to actually go to a shopping mall. People book tickets online and can even check in online before boarding an airplane. The Internet makes our lives more convenient.
Socializing: People access the Internet to socialise and to connect with other people with similar interests. The rise of social media has played a big role in making the Internet more popular than ever.
Sharing of information: People want to share information by transferring files or by organizing events in a working environment or as part of their social lives. They use email to do that as it is cheaper and easier than telephone calls. Social bookmarking sites and online clipboards are on the rise to fulfill a need to share information.
News updates: News updates can be accessed on the Internet as it happens. Big sporting events or major news events updates are definite reasons why people access the Internet.
Entertainment: Movies can be watched via the Internet and music can be downloaded and listened to. The Internet has become a popular entertainment medium.
Making money: The Internet now also provides an income opportunity to many people.
Closing distances: The Internet has closed distances and brought the world together. Other countries do not seem to be that far away anymore because communication has become that much faster.
The not so obvious reasons why people use the Internet are:
Education: Many qualifications can now be completed online. Although some of these qualifications are questionable, many reputable universities now use onlineteaching to reach a wider student base.
The rise of online corporate communication: Internet marketing, online advertising and public relations are huge fields. The Internet provides ample opportunities to reach a worldwide target audience which previously could not bereached.
Instant gratification: We live in a society of instant gratification. People want things immediately and do not want to wait. The Internet assists in getting things faster by being able to transact and communicate much quicker.
The Internet has become part of our daily lives but has also exposed us more than ever. Sadly many people socialize online but then neglect their real relationships or opportunities to connect with people offline. Online fraud, theft (including identity theft), less privacy and information overload are some of the disadvantages of always being connected.
