FARMER EDUCATION IN THE USA.
Farmer education by means of the extension system grew rapidly. Now virtually every one of the nation's more than 3,000 counties has its county agricultural agent, and some counties employ several assistant agents. The federal and state funds paid the agents mainly. A national extension director who, with his staff, has offices in Washington heads the system. The states and counties, however, largely control the actual work. The state extension director works closely with the agricultural college and the experiment stations in his state; in fact, he may also be dean of the college or director of a station. On the state director's staff will be a number of specialists. Each specialist is an expert in his particular field, which may be poultry, fruits, vegetables, dairy cattle, beef cattle, hogs, or some other important farm products in his state. The specialists help farmers through the county agents. When the extension education was new, demonstration of improved methods took most of the county agent's time. Nowadays the county agent's offices essentially information centres where farmers come for facts and advice. 
In one way or another US farmer continues his education throughout his life. He subscribes to a variety of farm periodicals, some national in scope, others state or regional, and still others which specialize in single subjects such as cattle, poultry, or dairying. These magazines direct his attention to new scientific discoveries, new methods which other farmers find useful, and provide him with ideas which he can apply to his own farm business.
Many newspapers carry farm pages which report the significant agricultural developments in their areas. Numerous radio and TV-stations maintain agricultural specialists who broadcast each day's market quotations, weather reports and other useful news for the farmer. The educational advantages primary forced in making the American farm so remarkably productive. The information and ag­ricultural education enables farmer to keep abreast of mechanical and scientific developments, to learn promptly about important new ideas and to judge their possible value to his own particular farming enterprises. He knows that he cannot afford to be ignorant.
