Farms in Britain
British agriculture is based on high-quality farm machinery and utilization of fertilizers. It is greatly influenced by the climate. Britain has a mild climate. The temperature seldom exceeds 32°C or falls below zero. Thus the farmers work in the fields all the year round.
Most of the farms are less than 50 acres each. The type of farms depends on many factors: climate, soil, slope and altitude.
They are divided into four types: arable farms, dairy farms and mixed farms. In the eastern part of Great Britain most farms are arable. The farmers having such farms grow different crops: wheat, barley, oats. In the western part of the country most farms are dairy. Farmers keep milking cows, sheep, pigs or poultry on their farms. Sheep-breeding is spread in Wales and Scotland, cattle-rearing in the south-east of England (Kent), horticulture in Cornwall and Yorkshire.
Small farms in Britain are usually mixed farms on which farmers grow crops and keep animals as well.
Today the main tendency in agricultural development of Great Britain is that small farms are gradually disappearing because they cannot compete with modern industrial farms based on up-to-date agricultural machinery.
British farmers are working hard to earn their living, to maximize the yield and minimize the cost of production, to supply the population of the country with various foodstuffs of high quality, to ensure further progress in all agricultural branches.

II. Перепишите следующие предложения; подчеркните Participle I и Participle II и установите функции каждого из них, т. е. укажите, является ли оно определением, обстоятельством или частью глагола-сказуемого. Переведите предложения на русский язык.
1. Ploughing his field, R. Burns made up his poems.
2. Sunlight provides energy used by plants in photosynthesis.
3. When crossing wheat and rye, plant breeders obtained the first man-made grain.
4. Fertilizers containing carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, sulphur, calcium, sodium, molybdenum, manganese and iron are called minor nutrients or trace fertilizers.
III. Перепишите следующие предложения; подчеркните в каждом из них модальный глагол или его эквивалент. Переведите предложения на русский язык.
1. One can easily imagine what can happen if big factories do not pay wages on time.
2. The farmers have to build new greenhouses.
3. Crops should not be harvested before they mature.
4. Every agricultural college in Great Britain may cooperate with some leading farmers.
IV. Выпишите из текста эквиваленты к словам и словосочетаниям: высококачественная техника, удобрение, круглый год, довести до минимума стоимость продукции, продукты питания.
V. Перепишите текст и переведите его письменно.
VI. Перепишите предложевия, заполняя пропуски, соответствующими данными по вашему хозяйству (тип хозяйства, наименование сельскохозяйственной продукции, цифровые данные и т.п.).

VIII. Перепишите и письменно переведите на русский язык следующие предложения. Обратите внимание на перевод зависимого и независимого (самостоятельного) причастных оборотов (см. образец выполнения 2).
1. The labour resources are the men and women, including the farmers themselves, engaged in agriculture.
2. Many crops are grown by this farm, wheat being the most important.
3. Choosing a rotation plan, you should consider the type of soil and fertility, climate and topography.
IX. Перепишите и письменно переведите на русский язык следующие предложения. Обратите внимание на перевод простых, продолженных и сложных времен глагола в страдательном залоге (см. образец выполнения 3).
1. Triticale is being widely developed as a commercial crop and a feed grain.
