Great Britain
1. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The area of the UK is 244,000 sq.km and its population is about 57 million people.
2. Great Britain has a maritime climate. British winters are mild. Summers are cool and rainy. Fogs often occur in autumn and in winter.
3. Most people live in cities and small towns. London is the biggest one in Britain. It is a center of business and tourism. Birmingham is one of the largest industrial cities in the country. It is well known for its high-quality steels, cars, aircraft, machinery and electrical engineering equipment.
4. Great Britain is a highly developed industrial country. It is a great producer of coal and steel. Great Britain is famous for such branches as shipbuilding, machine building, motor industry, chemicals, textiles, etc. The industries are concentrated in the central part of the country. This is the so-called “Black Country”. South-eastern England has less rain, more sun and more fertile soil. This part of the country is an old commercial and agricultural region called “Green England” for its fields.
5. The UK is a constitutional monarchy. The monarch has very little power and can only reign with the support of Parliament. The Parliament consists of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The House of Commons is the part of parliament in Britain whose members are elected; members of the House of Lords are not elected. Lords of Parliament are peers and bishops.

OUR UNIVERSITY
The Tver technical University is one of the biggest higher schools in our country. The Tver Technical University was established in 1922 as the Moscow Peat Institute. In 1994 it was renamed into the Tver State Technical University. Every year many specialists for national economy graduate from the University. They are chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, economists, ecologists, managers, system engineers and many others.
Education at the University is organised in two forms: full-time and extramural. There are also some part-time courses. There are several departments for full-time students. They are machine-building, civil-engineering, automated systems, environmental protection and engineering ecology, management and social communication. The students study required and optional subjects. Some of them are philosophy, history, higher mathematics, chemistry, foreign language, theoretical mechanics and many others.
There is a big scientific library with two reading halls, 20 computer classes, a training range. Besides regular studies many students carry out scientific research work.
