Theatres and Festivals in Great Britain
For any Englishman there can never be any doubt as tо who the world's greatest dramatist is. Only one name сад possibly suggest itself, that of William Shakespeare.
Although it would be impossible to exaggerate the importance of Shakespeare, one must not confuse importance with popularity. Of the large number of London theatres only three or four are at present performing Shakespearean plays, and even then not every night. A visitor from another country, staying in London for only a few nights, might have difficulty in finding a Shakeapearean play to see.
The reason for that is that the London, theatre is very commercialized, Everything is done for the sake of entertainment and profit. The expenses of running a London theatre are great and so great efforts are made to appeal to popular taste doesn’t include Shakespeare or any other form of serious drama.
All the commercial theatres in England are situated in the West End, which is in fact, in the centre of the city. Before a new play is put on in the West End, it may have a short trial run at a provincial theatre, because a lot of money is at risk. Once in London, if the publicity is bad, it might be a failure at once; if it is lucky like Agatha Christie's play "The Mousetrap" it might continue triumphantly for more than 30 years.
In a provincial town the system is different. The population is smaller and they have a repertory theatre which changes its play about every three weeks, whether it is successful or not. There are two repertory theatres in the West End too, the National and the Royal Shakespeare companies which present three or four plays in rotation for several weeks. This system allows classics and old favourites to be seen again by regular theatre-goers; but the government has to help this type of theatre financially, because the majority of the paying public is more interested in new light comedies, musicals and thrillers.
One of the places where the public can see old and well-known or experimental plays — both of which can be financially risky — is in the so-called "Club" theatres where the money problem is not important since the actors are paid little or nothing. A play is produced for one or two weeks and any profits from this go to pay for the next production. There are several "Club" theatres like this, in the London suburbs and all over England. The members are often professional (out-of-work or ex-actors) but there are also many amateurs who have a completely different fob in the daytime.
Interesting plays can also be seen at numerous festivals held all over Great Britain. It has become a tradition not only in big cities but in small towns.
